The contrast finish to the ground half of the blade, sometimes called 'kasumi' -
from the Japanese word for 'hazy', is achieved by finishing the blade on a series of whestones. The finish is very dependent on the combination of steels and the whetstones used. This is not in fact a kasumi finish as the border between the two different steels is crisp not hazy, thus we call it a 'contrast' finish.
